HRS Rose Show Report

Show Co-Convenors, Ellen Spencer & Dale Lovering, would like to thank all who helped plan and execute a successful flower show. The Design Celebrities were a big hit, and the show committee has already started planning for next years' show at the Southshore Centre on Monday, July 6th, 2009.

The awards and trophies will be presented at the September 15th show, but here is a sneak peek for you; you can also check out pictures of the winning entries below.

Millennium Garden

This spring and summer has been quite a surprise for us gardeners, wouldn't you say? So much rain produced vigorous growth in all the rose bushes, and made the weekly watering almost unnecessary until the last part of August. Those volunteers who faithfully fulfilled their commitment to deadhead and clean up the ground certainly had a big chore each time in June and July.

However, the extra moisture cause some black spot in the Morden roses. The spray program didn't happen as often as it might have.

Initial summer pruning on the shorter bushes took place near the end of July, and then groups of 5 members spent a morning pruning out considerable canes of the taller bushes. Unfortunately, a couple of branches broke over because we had cleared out so many older ones. But new growth will fill in quickly.

In the fall, we don't deadhead, but leave the hips on the branches to signal to the plants that it is time to slow down the growth. Regular clean up of the petals still has to continue into Oct.
At this time I want to thank those volunteers who have come to work at the garden as they signed up for. Your commitment is certainly appreciated.

We now need volunteers to clean up for Sept. and Oct. Please call Edna to take a week, 721-0484. Each year some of our volunteers aren't able to take on the jobs they have in the past, so I ask every member who is able to consider stepping up and helping out if you aren't already. We have a responsibility to keep this public garden in the best shape possible.

A wasps' nest was noted in early Aug. at the back of our stand with the garden guide. This was mentioned to the city, in hopes they had ways to remove it. Also, 2 pieces of the rock wall that surrounds the garden went missing after Kempenfest. The city has replaced them.

We have encountered a problem with moisture condensing on the inside of the plexiglass cover of the garden guide. Does anyone know how to overcome this? It has become so fogged up, that it is difficult to read the guide. If someone has knowledge of how to rectify this please call Edna at 721-0484.

Remember, this is our garden and it represents our club. Let's have some more volunteers and spread the work around. I am looking forward to hearing from some more volunteers to finish of the season.

Edna Caldwell, Chair of Memorial Rose Garden

Dear Rosie

(This is a regular feature in the Huronia Rose Society newsletter. We hope that it will help all of you in some way. If you have a question you would like Rosie to answer, please bring it with you to a general meeting, or send it to HuroniaRoseSociety@hotmail.com. Rosie will be happy to answer any question she can!)

Dear Rosie:

When is the best time to transplant Asiatic lilies?

        Thanks!

Hello Everyone:

This is a great question. Although we are mainly interested in growing roses, the lily has been a companion plant along with the delphinium and the clematis for our Huronia Rose Society for a number of years.

Lilies should be transplanted in October, and October is a good time to buy them.

Existing lilies may also be dug up in October. Determine the best spot in your garden for them. A sunny location in well drained soil is best. Plant the bulb four or five times deeper than its height. Lily bulbs will find their own depth as they grow.

Add some peat moss, some compost and some bone meal to the hole. Cover and identify the location with a name tag so that you don't dig it up when you are doing further gardening. Look for the bright green shoots to appear in early spring.

Happy gardening,

        Rosie

How to Draw a Rose

A rose is a 5 sided pentagon; this is because there are normally 5 large overlapping petals at the outside, and the petals continue to overlap closer and tighter towards the middle of the flower
Draw a rough pentagon shape; don't worry about using straight lines or making it even. If you need help drawing the shape then simply draw a circle first, then use that as a guide as shown below, marking 5 points roughly equal distances apart along the outside of the circle.

Now draw the 5 large petals extending into the middle of the flower, and continue adding additional smaller layers of petals closer and closer to the center, again each layer having 5 overlapping petals. This becomes less important closer in as the petals overlap more and more. Finally draw in curved edges to the petals to create a natural look, and add shading as required.

To create a drawing of the rose from the side, again start with a simple shape, in this case an egg shape. Then we can add some overlapping outer petals, curling out at the top edge, plus the flower stalk and leaves.

Remember, every drawing starts with a few simple shapes - circles, lines etc - don't try to add any detail until you've sketched a rough outline from these basic building blocks. With a little practice you will find you can draw just about anything!
